When you get on the bus with your girlfriend,
there is no seating for two like in Murphy's Law.
It is too embarrassing to hold hands with your
girlfriend across the aisle seat on a bus.

여자 친구와 버스를 타면 머피의 법칙처럼
두 자리가 남는 좌석은 없습니다.
버스통로를 사이에 두고
손만 잡고 가는 상황이란
겪어보지 않은 사람은 모르는 난감함입니다.


One day after work, I got on the bus going
from Seoul to Incheon and took one of the few
seats that were not occupied. A couple that
looked more or less young, followed me.
Hesitating a few moments, the man of the two
sat in the front seat and the woman sat on
a seat two rows back. Those were the only
vacant seats.

서울에서 인천으로 퇴근을 하면서
몇 안 남은 빈자리에 앉았습니다.
이어서 다소 어려보이는
커플이 버스에 올라탔습니다.
둘은 잠시 망설이더니
남자는 앞자리에 여자는 두 칸이나
뒷자리에 앉았습니다.
남는 자리가 그 것 뿐이었기 때문입니다.


In seeing this, I felt a conflict in my mind.
Should I simply ignore this situation because
I'm so tired? Should I suggest my idea?
I intended to sleep sitting in my seat, but could
not sleep in the middle of the rattling bus.

저는 그 모습을 보고
심각한 고민을 하게 되었습니다.
피곤한데 그냥 모른 척 하고 갈까?..
말을 꺼내볼까?..
버스는 한참을 달리고 있고
눈을 감고 억지로 잠을 청해 봐도
오늘따라 버스가 유난히 흔들립니다.


After contemplating the idea for a few minutes,
I said to the woman beside me.
"Do you happen to have a boy friend?"
"What? Well.. yes, I do."
She looked somewhat surprised.

몇 분을 고민 끝에 제 옆에 앉으신
여성분에게 말을 꺼냈습니다.
"혹시.. 남자친구 있으세요?"
"네? 아.. 예.. 그런데요?"
여성분은 조금 놀란 눈치였습니다.


"Well, I would like to give our seats to that
couple that is sitting apart, then they can sit
together. Would you do that for them?"

"다름이 아니고요.
저기 커플이 따로 떨어져 앉아서
저희가 양보하면
저 커플이 같이 앉을 수 있을까 싶어서요..
혹시 그러실 의향이 있으세요?"


As I usually people, I asked her like
a greeting announcement of an announcer.

저는 늘 그렇듯이 아나운서의
인사멘트처럼 익숙하게 물어보았습니다.


"Oh, well, I can do that."
She agreed to my suggestion.

"아.. 예.. 그러세요.."
여성분은 다행이도 승낙을 해주었습니다.


I talked to the man of the couple. "Hey!
Why don't you sit over here with your girlfriend?"
He looked more or less surprised. I also stood
up and said to the woman looking at her
boyfriend, wondering what was going on.
"You two can sit side by side here."

저는 커플 중 남자 분에게 말을 걸었습니다.
"여자 친구랑 이쪽에 앉으세요."
남자는 다소 놀란 눈치였습니다.
무슨 일인지 고개를 내밀어
남자친구를 보는 여자 분에게도
"여기에 두 분이 앉으세요."
하면서 자리에서 일어났습니다.


Then the woman beside me also stood up,
and the air on the bus was a little confused.
Like this, the couple came to sit together,
arm in arm.

제 옆에 앉아계시던 여성분도 일어나시고
버스는 잠깐 혼란스러웠습니다.
이렇게 그 커플은 팔짱을 끼고 같이 앉게 되었습니다.


Sitting in a seat that I changed with the
man of the couple, I felt a little awkward
and embarrassed. However, I feel good whenever
I close my eyes and recall that moment.
At least four people can be happy, can't they?
All passengers on the bus might be happy, too.

저는 바꾼 자리에 앉으면서
늘 그렇듯이 어색하고 약간은 민망했습니다.
그래도 눈을 감고 생각해보면 기분은 참 좋습니다.
적어도 네 명은 행복해지는 일 아닐까요?
버스에 탄 승객들 모두가 행복해지는 일일 수도 있고요.


When I was about to get out of the bus
after passing through the freeway, the man
thanked me with a smile. "Sir, thanks a lot."
I returned the smile and nodded.

"저기요.. 감사합니다."
고속도로에서 벗어나서 맨 처음 내리는 저에게
커플의 남자분이 웃으면서 인사를 합니다.
저도 웃으면서 목례만 했습니다.

요즘처럼 각박하고 메마른 세상
